Streaming Services – what they are and how to use them

A number different content streaming services are now available. Knowing what they do and how to use them can be a bit confusing, so this article aims to make it easier.

Streaming services can be broadly broken up into two categories – audio and video. The common point of importance is that both types of services require a proper internet connection to work. If there’s an internet outage, or your connection is running in 4G backup mode then your streaming services can’t work properly or at all.


Audio Streaming

Spotify and Tidal are paid services which allow you to search for music and listen advertisement free. Soundcloud and Sonos Radio are are free services, however musical selection is more limited and there are adverts.

How to add Spotify, Tidal or Soundcloud to your Sonos system:

  • Make sure you are connected to your home wifi network
  • Open the Sonos S2 or S1 app on your phone
  • Tap to the settings button in the lower right corner.
  • Tap on “Services & Voice”
  • Under the Music & Content heading tap on “Add a Service” (the last option on the list)
  • Scroll to find the music service you wish to add, then tap on it and follow the prompts. Sonos will ask you to Sign up or Connect to the relevant service
  • Note that to use Spotify on Sonos, a PREMIUM account is required – it’s easiest to sign up for this using the Spotify app on your phone first. Sonos connects to whichever Spotify account is logged in on your phone.

How to add Sonos Radio to your Sonos system:

  • Make sure you are connected to your home wifi network
  • Open the Sonos S2 or S1 app on your phone
  • Tap to the settings button in the lower right corner.
  • Tap on “Services & Voice”
  • Under the Music & Content heading tap on “Add a Service” (the last option on the list)
  • Scroll (or search) to find Sonos Radio, then tap on it and follow the prompts. Sonos will ask you to agree to the terms of service


Video Streaming

Many video streaming services are available, and these are summarised below. First, use the links below to sign up to the services you wish to use. Make sure to record your new login details somewhere safe! Then, sign into the streaming service using either an Apple TV unit, or directly from a Samsung Smart TV.


Streaming Services

Apple TV is a “pay per use” service which allows viewers to rent or buy individual movies, television shows or series. Apple TV purchases are made through the users Apple ID. Rented shows must be viewed within a certain timeframe (usually 1 month), and a limitation applies on how long you make take to finish viewing the show once you begin.

Netflix is a “subscription” service – a monthly fee allows viewers to view as much content as they like. Netflix shows movies and television shows, as well as producing a large amount of content.

Kayo Sports is a “subscription” service – a monthly fee allows viewers to view as much content as they like. Kayo shows a wide selection of sports.

Binge is a “subscription” service – a monthly fee allows viewers to view as much content as they like. Binge shows content found on the Foxtel on demand platform.

Stan is a “subscription” service – a monthly fee allows viewers to view as much content as they like. Stan shows television series.

Disney Plus is a “subscription” service offering children’s content.

ABC iView is a “catch up” tv service. It is free to use, but viewers must register an account to access the service.

SBS On Demand is a “catch up” tv service. It is free to use, but viewers must register an account to access the service.


To access streaming services on Apple TV

All services are accessible using an Apple TV unit (HD or 4K) – each service has a free “app” which must be downloaded from the App Store.

The setup process differs from one service to another – the best way to proceed is to begin by downloading the relevant app onto your Apple TV and then launching it and following the on screen instructions to setup the service.

To access streaming services using SmartTV on a Samsung Television

Again, you’ll need to download the appropriate app for the service you want to access. Downloading apps requires a free Samsung account. Click here to make one, then come back to this page once that’s done.

Now you have a Samsung account, you can use it to log in on your television and download the apps you require.

Once the apps are installed, you will need to log into each app using the relevant account details.
